whats going on?

once in a while i find myself needing to rant my opinions about certain things. this time its about billy corgan and rivers cuomo. those two are the lead singers and the brains behind two of my favorite bands smashing pumpkins and weezer respectively.
billy corgan seems to be a man with a lot of ambitions and he unfortunately has the tendency to name said ambitions before they bear any fruit. as a result we the fans are left with many empty promises and dissappointed feelings. his latest album while not entirely a disaster simply did not live up to the Smashing Pumpkins standard. It felt like a cash in on a glorious past. Since then we've had a couple cash in singles including one on a car commercial... If you check out Billy's tweets and his new website you would think that he has joined some kind of hippie cult.
things dont look too bright over on the weezer side of things. i recently read a post on the weezer boards saying how fed up the poster was with weezer and that he was officially making smashing pumpkins his favorite band... i was about to let weezer surpass smashing pumpkins for the no. 2 slot (bloc party is my no.1) when news of their latest album came up. With song titles like "In the Mall" "The Girl Got Hot" and other ridiculously lame sounding titles Weezer's seventh album has become some kind of a joke for oldschool weezer fans (in particular those who like Pinkerton). The single for the album has been released and it is a catchy poppy confection of a song meant to appeal to the masses not unlike the way Beverly Hills did. I can't help but think this is pandering to the pop crowd in order to make more money. It would be justified except I doubt theres anything remotely good enough on the album, which by the way is called RADITUDE (WTF?), to justify its presence. The album art is even more of an atrocity. Its a picture of a dog in midair in a living room... Its boring (the dog has no charisma just like the lead singer) and looks damn ugly. Worse yet some people think it's good!? What is the world coming to...

pork and beanz0rz

when i was a young one I discovered Weezer. I enjoyed and listened to the Blue Album all the time, it was inspiring, rocking, and uplifting.
now i feel old, i found my younger sister Amanda, who is more than 10 years my junior, introducing weezer to her sleepover friend. they were both watching the Pork and Beans video on youtube, and my sister says she really likes it, funny thing is I showed her the video weeks ago and she shrugged it off. she likes it, but at the same time she wants it to be a part of her own identity if she likes it, not her copying the ways of her older brother.
i realized from those days that if you want to build a fan base you have to start with fresh ears. its like the first time you played an RPG, it might not have been the best game ever, but since it was your first you will always remember and cherish it. Music is a vast experience, but kids have relatively fresh ears when it comes to music, they dont have preconceived expectations of what music should be, but sure they are impressionable otherwise they wouldnt listen to pop confection like the highschool music crap, but they also have fresh ears, and if artists can tap into that they will have a fanbase for years to follow, the bands i follow today I got into when I was 13-14 years old, with the exception of a few "new" discoveries.

even without one last push
i will eventually fall
